Fall-Winter-Spring League

NEW FOR SPRING 2024 SEASON

We will be changing the format of the League so that we will be offering a series of mini tournaments rather than weekly scrimmages. It is our hope that changing the League to this format will allow teams the time to get their practice t-shirts, jerseys and confirm their rosters.

Mini Tournaments are scheduled as such:

- Sunday, April 28, 2024
- Sunday, May 12 & 26, 2024
- Sunday, June 09, 2024 (Championship Tournament)

Program Overview

  • EVALUATIONS: All athletes must attend Athlete Evaluations. It is here that Parent Reps and Instructors are confirmed for the season. Athletes continue to attend Evaluations until they are placed on a team.

  • PROGRAM REGISTRATION: Once an athlete has been placed on a team, they are sent a registration code that will allow them to register online for the upcoming season by selecting their assigned practice location day/time.

  • PARENT REP: Is required before a team can start registering athletes. These are confirmed at Evaluations. Anyone stepping forward to assume the role can select their child and his/her friends on their chosen practice location.

  • SELECTION OF ATHLETES: Can be made by the Parent Reps or a Site Convenor at Evaluations. Staff will be available at every evaluation to answer parent questions.

  • TEAM JERSEY: Is ordered on behalf of the team by the Parent Rep directly to the organization’s merchandise supplier. Parents are responsible for the cost of the jersey, and these are payable directly to the supplier. Returning athletes would not need to re-purchase a team jersey.

  • ATHLETE PLACEMENT. Almost all athletes are placed on teams. However, should an athlete not be placed on a team they will be offered the opportunity to join one of our seasonal camps.

TEAM PARENT REP

A Parent Rep is required for each team participating in the VISION Premier League. Registration for any available team will not begin until one has been confirmed. The responsibility of the Parent Rep is as follows:

  • Confirm the final team roster

  • Ensure all athletes receive their jersey from the program supplier

  • Works with parents to ensure a parent sits with the team at league games as the parent bench coach

  • Being provided a copy of the permit and cancelation dates, tracks these to ensure all families are aware of possible cancellations and make-up sessions

  • Works with the instructor and office to staff to arrange for make-up sessions should there be permit cancellation

  • Coordinates with parents’ possible team outings for the athletes

  • Ensures quality control of practices by filling out a short survey after every practice

League Overview

First started in 2001, VISION Premier League was started like other recreational programs with Parent Volunteer Coaches being asked to step forward and coach their child's team. In 2013 the program was modified with Instructors being hired to run practices while Parent Volunteers continued to bench coach teams during games.

INSTRUCTION
Volleyball Winnipeg provides instructors for every team practice. To allow for more playing time teams are generally maintained at 8-10 athletes and two teams will train together on one court to ensure team play during practices.

TEAM PARENT REP
For our program to work effectively every team will require a "Parent Rep". The parent rep will communicate directly with the Program Director should problems arise. Bench coaching during league games is also undertaken by parents and is organized by the Parent Rep. Parents participating in team games as bench coaches will provide the team instructor with feedback on what areas of the game the teams need to work on.

PLAYING TIME
League Games: During regular league games coaches are asked to respect the league's fair-play policy. The goal is to introduce the game of volleyball in a stress-free environment where playing time is well distributed.
Championship Tournament: Coaches may now reward those athletes who have excelled.  Playing time is not generally equally distributed although we do hope that coaches will find roles for every member of the team. We allow for 12 unlimited subs to encourage playing time.
Positional Play: Parents should also understand that, in divisions where athletes play in assigned positions, it may be difficult to apply equal playing time on teams where more players request to play the same position.

GAME FORMAT
Please note that teams in divisions with eight or more teams can expect to play two matches of 45 minutes each while divisions with 4-6 teams will likely play one match of 90 minutes. In brief:

  • Matches will be two sets only when playing two matches
  • Matches will be four sets when playing one match
  • There are no time-outs
  • Bench coaching is limited to providing feedback in-between sets. Referees and a site convenor will be on hand to sit with teams to review strategy and offer feedback if needed.

Out of town residents’ welcome! We have many participating athletes who reside outside the Winnipeg-area. Our program is not limited to Winnipeg residents only.

LEAGUE RULES
In every division the league allows for:

  • 12 Subs unlimited
  • Athletes may pass a serve with their hands

DIVISION C
Triple Ball Format - see Volleyball Canada

DIVISION B

  • Rotate: No assigned positions. Teams rotate out of position one and into position six to allow for equal playing time.
  • 5-Serve Rule: There is a max of 5 serves per athlete with the serving team rotating to allow a new athlete the opportunity to serve
  • Step in: Athletes can step over the line when serving

DIVISION A

  • Volleyball Canada rules in effect with no libero

DIVISION AA

  • Volleyball Canada rules in effect with libero
