FAQ's, Athletic Resumes & Recruitment Videos

College/University Coaches Need Proof

All colleges require proof of athletic ability from an athlete. There are 2 ways to present volleyball skills to a coach:

  1. In person - the coach seeing a live game or practice
  2. Video - the coach seeing video of a live game or practice

It is obvious option 1 is ideal, but option 2 has it's own benefits if done properly.

Volleyball Winnipeg has created many recruitment videos for aspiring athletes who were interested  in playing at certain colleges/universities. They were all successful in their results for matching with a volleyball team! We have 2 athletes who were so thankful that they wanted to share their videos with others like them!

Additional (optional) pieces of the video you may want to add after the 2-3 minutes of volleyball skills:

These items are necessary for the athletic resume and cover page.

  • A video of you explaining why you want to play college level volleyball, why you fit in with the program and can balance secondary education with a college sport
  • Coaches enjoy when athletes are committed to their education. This ensures you will stay at the school for multiple years and they can count on you, spend time on training you. Talk about why you want to go to college or university and the desire to finish the degree you are going for.

List in the recruitment video:

  • Live game play against another team
  • Positional drills presenting volleyball skills
  • Overall skill drills such as volleying, passing, digging, blocking and serving
  • Continuation drills with another athlete Ex. pass-attack-recover
  • Fast paced drills
  • 2-3 minute video. This is a fast paced video so the coach can simply see your technique and decide to move forward with communicating about future possibilites.
  • Do not hire a professional to do the video. You can have it done for free by one of our Vision coaches and a few friends.
  • Uploading the video to YouTube and sharing the link with coaches prove to be the most cost effective and simple form of sharing. See our scholarships page for more details.

Common Recruiting Mistakes:

  • Waiting for the phone to ring
  • Not having an up-to-date academic and athletic resume
  • Depending on others to find you a scholarship
  • Paying for a recruiting service
  • Thinking that college and university coaches are surfing the net looking for athletes. Don't believe that posting your personal profile on a recruiting service web site will get you much attention.

Our advice... BE PROACTIVE!!

Ideas on being pro-active:

  • Education first! Find schools (anywhere in the world) you want to attend for academic reasons and create a list.
  • Use that list to research their volleyball programs. If you cannot find their contact information than you find a faculty member involved in any sport management/professor position.
  • Contact each coach on the list if they are accepting athletes and if they have athletic scholarships available. Explain you have a recruitment video, athletic resume and are serious about the commitment.

Safety precautions:

  • Always have more than 1 school and team you are speaking to. Have at least 5 schools minimum.
  • Confront the coach with all questions you have (you get a good idea of who the coach is and what you are signing up for).
  • Asking for a scholarship shows you are confident.
  • Apply at your favourite schools regardless of volleyball. It is a bonus to play, but most college/universities will not allow athletes to play unless their GPA is over a 3.5.

Questions you may ask your potential coach:

  • Are you looking for more ________ (setters, left sides, middles, etc.)?
  • What will my playing time be like?
  • How many other athletes play my position?
  • How many practices are in an average week?
  • How long is the season?
  • How many games/tournaments do we play a season?
  • Is there a work out regime mandatory for every athlete?
  • Is there an academic requirement of how many classes to take per semester and standard minimum of GPA?
  • What scholarships are available to athletes (partial, full, etc.)?
  • What has the team been ranked in the past 3 years in their league?
  • Who is the top competitor the team faces? Where are they located?
  • What are the coaches plans for beating the top team?
